Pieter was born in 1931 in Pretoria. This is what the artist had to say about himself: “Born between the great drought, the depression and the Second World War, I discovered at a very young age that the world I found myself in was not a comfortable one . . . at around age four I decided that this life was not for me. I began creating another world for myself - in pictures . . .” Pieter studied Art at UNISA under Sakkie Eloff, Leo Theron, Robert Hodgins and others. In 1960 he worked under Alfred Krentx and in 1971 under Erik Laubscher. Between 1979 and 1980 he attended the National Hoger Institute for Schone Kinst at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Belgium. In 1982 and 1985 he continued his studies at the Stedelijek Akademie in Ghent and the Ryks Centrum for Grafiek in Kasterlee, Belgium. Between 1983 and 1985 Pieter studied wood-block printing in Japan. His work comprises mainly of landscapes, portraits, still life, figures and abstract pictures and he works in pastel, oil water colour, ink, pencil, charcoal and in various other graphic media. Pieter had many one-man and group exhibitions and between 1988 and 1989 he exhibited with Marc Chagall, Yaacov Agam and Ben Avram intern alia in Madrid, Spain. His recent exhibitions ran along with his 65th birthday and were the largest and most successful ever held in South Africa. Pieter is widely regarded as the most popular artist in South Africa today.
